Like the hydrangea the peony has a wild petal structure and subtle color changes. I think that is what drew me to it. This variety of peony was a real challenge to paint. It wore me out. Think it will be a while before I paint another.

Several months ago I applied to become an exhibitor in the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts. After going through the jury process I was accepted into the show. I’m excited to have the opportunity to be a part of this event. The Festival is located in Laguna Beach California, a long time artist colony and seaside community. The show runs for two month, from July to the end of August. If you get a chance stop by.

For the last several weeks I have been busy creating my space and dealing with all the other details that go along with the show. There has been a lot to do, but I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. This painting started out as a straight forward still life painting. After gathering up all the ingredients and composing a composition that I liked I realized it was a little more than that. Without thinking I had included in this piece a lot of items I use every single day. The large red brush and the greenish brush above it are my varnish brushes. My palette knife is on the right. The big brushes up top are used for mixing paint and the other brushes are use to apply paint. The orange scissors are used almost every day because I cut a lot of stuff. The white rose and the little items at the bottom of the jar are some of my inspiration. Oh, and that little snail crawling up the side of the glass jar, that’s me – I paint so slowly. These are the tools of my trade.

Here is the third installment of my “Finds Series” -- composed of like objects that clutter my studio. I have always had a thing for oil cans and have collected them for a long time. There is something about the shape and functionality of them that I like. They come in all shapes and sizes but I find I like the little ones best. The patina on an old, well used can will show some wonderful colors. The can in the middle left is my most prized -- it is a sterling silver oil can made by Tiffany.

For the last month I have been working on completing several commission pieces. “Cape Cod Shells” is the final one. The client sent me a wonderful collection of shells gathered by her family on vacations to Cape Cod. My mission was to select from this array of shells and create a painting. It turned out to be one of the more challenging paintings I have done in a while. It’s good to be challenged.

Now that I have finished my last commission of the year I am closing down my studio for a while. It’s time to turn my attention to family, friends and the holidays. I would like to thank everyone who purchased a painting from me this year and to everyone who stopped by my blog and took a look. I got some great feedback and comments on the pieces I posted. The pomegranate trees are in full bloom here in Southern California. It is a sure sign the seasons are changing. Fortunate for me my neighbor has a mature tree that bares tons of fruit every year. Half of the trees branches hang over my fence so I have ready access to a lot of fruit. Though these pomegranates don’t get as large as the ones you may see in the market they are sweet and tasty and a wonderful subject for a painting.

Some of my best inspirations come form item I have found at flea markets. Here in Southern California there is no shortage of them. Every Sunday there is a flea market some where. My favorite is the one in Irvine. It is one of the smaller shows but the vendors always seem to have the best merchandise. One criterion I use when purchasing a possible painting subject is that it has to some meaning to me. I am so invested in every painting I do that if the subject doesn’t move me in a personal way I don’t paint it. When I saw this little glass it brought back memories of when I was a kid. This is the same type of glass my mother would use to serve juice in to my siblings and me. It’s funny how a simple little item can bring up a swell of memories.

Here is installment number two in my “Finds Series”. This series is based on creating paintings incorporating like items in one composition. All the items included in the paintings I have collected and sit on the shelves in my studio.

If there is one thing everyone seems to have a few of it is shells. Mine are scattered around my studio. Some on shelves in clear sight and others are packed away in boxes. I did cheat a little on this painting – for composition purposes I felt I needed to include seaweed. Fortunately the beach is just a few blocks and away and there is always plenty of the weed there.

Like most still life painters I have collected a variety of objects over the years to use as subject matter in my paintings. I have shelves packed with treasures picked up along the way. Every item was brought to my studio with the intent of using it in a painting; each piece has some quality that I found interesting and appealing. Some have sat in their places for years waiting. I want to paint them all!!! – So I came up with the idea of producing a series incorporating like items in one composition. I have entitled it the “The Finds Series”. The magnolia is one of my favorite flowers. The trees are full of them right now. Big and beautiful. Two light sources were used for “Magnolia”. A soft spot was used on the left side and natural light coming from a south facing window for the right side.

Last week I had the chance to have dinner with a wonderful gardener and her family. Before we sat down to an alfresco dinner we toured her garden. She prefers to stay away from your everyday flora and fauna and concentrates on seeking out the unusual. I always come away with a cutting or two. The espalier apple trees where just starting to bare fruit so I swiped a few. They weren’t ripe but I didn’t know when I would be getting back her way and I thought they would be a nice subject for a painting.

Rose’s are everywhere right now. You can’t drive down a street without seeing bush after bush of these beauties. White seems to be the preferred color. Some have a little blush of pink or yellow. They are a great subject and when I paint them their aroma fills my studio. An extra bonus.

The epiphyllum is a plant in the cactus family. Also know as the cactus orchid. The blossoms are large and delicate. This one was about 8 inches in diameter. They came in a variety of colors. A neighbor who cultivates epiphyllums was kind enough to give me a bloom.

This little antique Chinese porcelain brush washer (plus two others) has been sitting around in my studio for a long time, but has never been used in any of my painting. It was about time for it to make an appearance. I like the idea of the pot sitting just inside the shadow. Maybe a grouping of all three would make a nice composition.

I like trying different approaches to lighting when setting up still lifes. This painting has two light sources. One is the defused light from a window on the right and the other is from underneath. This lighting lends itself to lost edges and long shadows both of which I like.

I’ve always loved vintage neon signs. They are works of art. A couple of weeks ago I made an early Sunday morning drive into downtown Los Angeles. On Broadway you can find some wonderful examples of theater marquees for the early to mid 1900’s. A few of the theaters are still in use, but most are in pretty bad condition. This is a painting of a portion of the Palace Theater marquee. The theater opened in 1911.

While I was wandering around photographing these great signs I was trying to imagine what Broadway must have been like on a Friday or Saturday night when these theaters were in their glory. Unfortunately this area is very run down now.

This spring I am going to try to get to the Boneyard in Las Vegas. From the pictures I’ve seen it looks like a great place.

This clock has been floating around my studio for a while. I’ve held off on painting it because I knew that, when I did paint it, I wanted it to be more than just a painting of a clock. It finally struck me last week. I adding a few ingredients and was able to take this clock from humble timepiece to representing a perception.

This is my take on the Doomsday Clock. The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic clock face, maintained since 1947 by the board of directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at University of Chicago.

Originally, the analogy represented the perception of how close the threat of global nuclear war was, but since includes climate-changing technologies and "new developments in the life sciences” that could inflict irrevocable harm. The closer the clock is to midnight, the closer the world is to global disaster.

Murphy’s Law: anything that can go wrong will go wrong. That is how I felt while I was painting “Never Again”. I don’t know if it was the subject matter, the weather, the season. Sometimes there are paintings that you just can’t let go of until they are completed no matter what. This was one of those.

I liked the “Lemon in Silver” composition so much that I decided to paint it on a larger scale. The only part of this painting that gave me much trouble was the yellow of the lemon. There are only a couple of colors that I really don’t like painting – yellow is one of them. I usually paint wet on wet and when working with a transparent I find it can be tricky. I’m happy with the results but I’ll be staying away from lemons for a while.

I don’t think there is a backyard in Southern California that doesn’t have some kind of a fruit tree in it. Grapefruit, orange, lime, kumquat, loquat, plum, apple, Asian pear. Everybody has a fruit tree. Mine is a lemon tree. The thing is probable 40 years old and stands about 18 feet tall. The tree gets very little water and is only pruned every other year, but despite this neglect it produces an incredible amount of sweet lemons. There are hundreds on it right now. It flowers and bares fruit all year round. I occasionally think about cutting it down but then I would probably miss it.

We’re back to our challenges. The subject this time was a gummy worm.

The little bird in my painting is a German wind up tin toy. When you wind it up its beak opens and closes while it turns its head, sings a song and flaps its wings. Busy little thing. I have been trying to get this guy into a painting for a while.

The last few months Jelaine hasn’t been feeling well and we decided to put off any new challenges until she was back to her usual sassy self. SHE’S BACK!!! I miss our monthly brain tease and am looking forward to getting back to it.

I love hydrangeas and thought I would revisit them on a little larger scale. The petals had me going for a while but I got thought them and am happy with the out come. WHEW!!

March turned out to be a very busy month for me. I had two large commission pieces to complete, spent a wonderful week in San Francisco and finished the 24"x 24" Tulip painting that was inspired by the small piece I painted at the beginning of the month. Whew!!

I missed being a part of this months Artists Challenge, but have been assigned to choose the April subject. Surprisingly, I have already found an item that I think will be a lot of fun to use.

Last week I spent a few days in the Temescal Valley taking photos for possible landscape paintings. This area of Southern California is covered with large groves of Eucalyptus trees, California Oaks, mountains covered with poppies and large open meadows filled with emerald green vegetation. It’s a perfect place to find inspiration.

I thought it might be interesting to present this painting showing the stages I went through to produce it. This is not my usual painting process but I have wanted to experiment with some different techniques and I thought this little painting would be a good subject. For this painting I tried a more painterly approach. I also did some under painting which is something I never do. I don’t know if I really like doing under painting. Maybe I need to do more to figure that out. Usually I get going with the color right away. But this is just an exercise so I thought I should try. I have a long way to go with landscape paintings but I did enjoy producing this little painting.

While I was working on “Tulips” it became apparent to me that this is one of those paintings that works in the intimate 6”x6” format but could also work as a larger scale painting. So tomorrow I will begin that process. This is a complicated painting so I think it may take some time but I feel it will be beautiful 24"x 24".

I decided to take a more graphic approach to this painting. Looks like Jelaine and I had the same idea. It was a great exercise. This is what the challenges are all about. For a while now I have wanted to incorporate butterflies into some of my paintings. This seemed like a good time to start. Though they were a little trying to paint I am happy with the outcome and hope to find more ways to get these little guys into future pieces.

I am back in my studio, after my Christmas break, working on some larger paintings, but I wanted to take time out to paint and post “Two Figs”. I don’t eat a lot of figs but the colors of this delicate fruit keeps my coming back.

Our “Challenge” for this month will be coming a little later on in the month. Jelaine has picked the subject and Otto and I have it in hand. Can’t wait to see what those two come up with.

Our December challenge item was picked by Jelaine. Unfortunately Otto was not able to participate in the challenge this month. Seems he had a little problem with keeping his panel on his easel. (You can get all the details on Jelaine’s blog).

I would like to thank everyone who purchased a painting from me this year and everyone who stopped by my blog and checked out what I have been up to. 2009 looks like it will be an interesting year. I will continue to paint my small paintings, but will also be concentrating more on larger format paintings.

Back in July, I was approached by Jelaine Faunce to participate in an artist challenge with her and fellow artists Otto Lange and Neil Hollingsworth .
The challenge goes like this (excerpt from Jelaine's Blog):

“Once a month, one of us picks an object to be the central focus of a painting. As we are scattered across the country, M and I being on the West Coast, Neil and Otto being in the Atlanta area, we'd need to either obtain four of one object and ship it out to the other three, or we'd need to pick an object which all four of us could obtain from our local national chain stores. How we choose to arrange that object for painting is entirely up to the individual and will remain a secret to us all until the month is up and we exchange jpeg's of our completed paintings. Because we are all realists and all lean toward strong dark/light contrast, the challenge will be in how we choose to portray the object, what we pair it with, how we arrange the setup, what story each of us wants to tell with our paintings. “

The idea here is to stay “personal and fun”. We are all working artists and sometimes it is a nice to take a break and do a painting just because.

This painting is a depiction of a portion of the terra cotta sculpture “Ideal Female Head” by the Frenchman Augustin Pajou 1770. The bust was designed as a model for a gilt wood console ornament on a balcony for the Salle de l'Opéra at the royal palace at Versailles. This elaborate theater was being newly renovated in preparation for the wedding of Marie-Antoinette and the Dauphin. The sculpture is part of the permanent collection at the Getty.

This variety of sunflower is called "Giant Mammoth". I thought I would give growing these behemoths a shot this summer. My reward was an amazing harvest of giant golden flowers. They stand around 12' tall with a head diameter of 10 to 12 inches. Next year I am going to plant more !!!

Recently I spent the day at the The Getty Center in Los Angeles. If you are ever in LA this site is not to be missed. The museum, gardens and research institute are perched on a ridge over looking the LA Basin and the Pacific Ocean. It is a spectacular place to spend the day. I was taken with this sculpture and thought it would make an interesting painting.

“Winter” is a painting of a portion of the marble sculpture, “Bust of Winter”, created by the German artist Paul Heerman (1673-1732). This sculpture is part of the permanent collection at the Getty Center.
